Stability AI Launches New Membership Model to Streamline Access to Generative AI Models
In 2023, Stability AI has been rapidly expanding its offerings with the launch of various generative AI models. To support this momentum, the company has introduced a new membership model aimed at facilitating the commercial use of its technologies.
Founded in 2019, Stability AI has secured considerable funding, including a notable $101 million round announced in 2022. The company gained recognition for its groundbreaking stable diffusion text-to-image generation model and has traditionally made many of its offerings accessible for free to researchers.
The newly announced membership model is designed to standardize the commercial application of Stability AI's models, allowing for greater enterprise deployment and enabling businesses to leverage these technologies for their own solutions.
Membership Tiers
The membership structure includes:
- A Free Tier for non-commercial personal and research use
- A Professional Tier priced at $20 per month
- An Enterprise Tier with custom pricing for larger organizations
Despite this new structure, Stability AI remains committed to keeping its models accessible. Emad Mostaque, founder and CEO of Stability AI, emphasized, “We remain committed to open models. The code and weights will continue to be available for all membership tiers, including both commercial and non-commercial usage, similar to the Meta Llama model."
How Memberships Change User Access and the Role of Clipdrop
Stability AI's models have previously been accessible through various platforms, including the company's Clipdrop website. Mostaque clarified that the new membership model primarily applies to self-hosted applications, giving users complete control over their data and products. In contrast, Clipdrop serves as a consumer-facing imaging application.
For current users, the shift will not alter existing access; however, new users will need a membership for both commercial and non-commercial use. Mostaque noted, “Our offering starts with our core models, and new and updated models will be released to members as they become available.”
Even free personal users can expect value from their membership, with benefits such as early access to new models, invitations to public forums, and opportunities for features on Stability AI’s channels.
Commercial users can look forward to increased prospects as interest grows among startups and large corporations. Mostaque stated, “Our suite of models offers a straightforward solution as generative AI adoption rises across the business landscape. We believe this will create a solid revenue base that will expand over time.”
Exciting Model Releases Ahead
Stability AI is not slowing down; the company continues to roll out innovative models. In 2023, it launched several key products, including:
- SDXL: A high-end text-to-image model
- SDXL Turbo: A faster iteration
- StableLM Zephyr 3B: For text content generation
- Stable Audio: For audio generation
- Stable Video: For video generation
- StableCode: For code generation
Most recently, on December 13, the company introduced the Stable Zero123 model, which enhances capabilities for building 3D images. Mostaque remarked, “This is the first of a series of 3D models from our talented team led by Varun Jhampani, who joined us from Google Brain. We anticipate that next year will be the year of generative media, just as this year was focused on language models.”
