Instagram Enhances Accessibility for Visually Impaired Users
Instagram has announced a new initiative aimed at improving accessibility for visually impaired users. The platform will now include alternative text for photos, creating descriptions that can be read by screen readers, allowing visually impaired users to better understand the images in their feeds.
Two Ways to Add Alternative Text
Instagram will implement alternative text through two methods:
1. Artificial Intelligence (AI): Utilizing object recognition technology, Instagram will automatically generate descriptions for photos. These AI-generated descriptions will include lists of items present in the images. While the descriptions may be basic, they provide an essential context for the billions of photos shared on the platform.
2. User-Generated Descriptions: Instagram is introducing a custom alternative text box that appears during image uploads. Users can craft their own detailed descriptions, allowing for a more personalized and expressive representation of the images.
Future Accessibility Enhancements
Instagram has plans to expand on these accessibility features in the future, though specific initiatives have yet to be disclosed. This move is part of a broader commitment from Instagram's parent company, Facebook, to enhance accessibility, which has included adding alt text to mobile apps and closed captions to live videos.
With these updates, Instagram aims to create a more inclusive environment for all users.
