Intel and Altera have unveiled new AI-optimized processors and field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) specifically designed for edge computing.
These innovative products are set to enhance industries such as retail, healthcare, automotive, and aerospace by integrating advanced AI capabilities.
In a statement, Dan Rodriguez, Intel’s Corporate Vice President and General Manager of the Network and Edge Solutions Group, emphasized, “This next generation of Intel edge-optimized processors and discrete GPUs unleashes powerful AI capabilities, enabling businesses to seamlessly integrate AI with compute, media, and graphics workloads.”
The collaboration between Intel and Altera responds to the increasing demand for AI-powered edge devices, facilitating quicker and more intelligent on-premises decision-making. The introduction of edge-optimized Intel Core Ultra processors, Intel Core processors, and Intel Atom processors, along with Agilex 5 FPGAs, aims to drive innovation across various sectors.

Intel Core Ultra Processors for Edge: These processors are integrated with Intel Arc GPUs and neural processing units (NPUs), achieving up to 5.02 times better image classification inference performance than previous models. Ideal for applications in retail, education, smart cities, and industrial environments, they support generative AI and demanding graphics workloads at the edge.
Core Processors for Edge: Utilizing a hybrid architecture that blends GPU power and performance, these processors offer up to 2.57 times greater graphics performance compared to earlier generations. Designed for scalability and swift deployment, they meet a broad spectrum of edge computing needs.
Intel Atom Processors x7000C Series: Specifically engineered for enterprise networking and telecommunications, these processors excel in packet processing throughput. Their built-in deep learning capabilities facilitate the detection of zero-day threats, enhancing overall network security.
Intel Atom Processors x7000RE Series: Targeting industrial and manufacturing applications, these processors come equipped with deep learning inference capabilities and up to 32 graphics execution units. They are optimized for fanless designs and support AI automation in warehousing, quality control, and more.
Agilex 5 SoC FPGAs: These FPGAs deliver AI capabilities and exceptional performance per watt, combining high efficiency with lower power consumption. Focused on embedded applications, they allow developers to integrate AI functionality without the need for dedicated accelerators.
Moreover, Altera has updated its FPGA portfolio with the launch of the new Altera brand and improvements to the FPGA AI Suite. These enhancements aim to provide flexible, robust solutions for customers across a range of industries, addressing challenges from the cloud to the intelligent edge.
