Intel Expands AI Degree Program to 18 New Community Colleges Across 11 States

Following a successful online pilot in 2020 with the Maricopa County Community College District, Intel is expanding its AI for Workforce Program to 18 additional schools across 11 states, including California, New Mexico, and Michigan. This expansion enables over 800,000 students to participate in a robust curriculum designed by Intel, culminating in a certificate or associate degree in artificial intelligence.

The program offers courses in data collection, computer vision, model training, coding, and AI ethics. In addition to curriculum development, Intel provides training and technical support to college faculty. Dell contributes expertise in technical infrastructure.

According to Carlos Contreras, senior director of AI and digital readiness at Intel, the program is structured into four key parts. The initial "Awareness" section engages students in discussions about the possibilities and implications of AI. The following two sections focus on hands-on learning to build essential technical skills. The final segment, known as "Capstone," challenges students to create and present projects that leverage AI to make a positive impact on society.

Intel emphasizes that collaborating with community colleges is a vital step towards democratizing AI technology, as these institutions attract diverse learners from various backgrounds. Additionally, this initiative allows Intel to identify potential candidates in a competitive field. The company plans to further expand the program to include 50 more schools by 2022.
