Google is set to introduce a new feature for Gemini subscribers, allowing them to create custom chatbots, known as Gems. These versatile bots can be tailored to act as gym buddies, cooking partners, writing editors, and more. Users can craft a Gem's unique personality and skills simply by providing a set of instructions.
Initially revealed during Google's I/O event in May, Gems enable users to create tailored experiences. For example, one could design a “knowledgeable, casual, and friendly” Gem to assist with planning low- or no-water gardens. For those who prefer to start without customization, Google will also offer a selection of premade Gems, including a learning coach, idea brainstormer, career guide, coding partner, and editor. Each Gem can be assigned a name and specific guidelines.
The rollout of Gems will be accessible to Gemini Advanced, Business, and Enterprise users on both mobile and desktop devices across over 150 countries and multiple languages. This initiative appears to be part of Google's strategy to compete with OpenAI, which has been allowing users to create and share their own chatbots for several months.
