On July 4th, 2024, Shanghai hosted the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) alongside the High-Level Meeting on Global Governance of Artificial Intelligence. During the event, Baidu’s Chairman and CEO, Li Yanhong, delivered a keynote speech on redefining success in the AI era.
Li cautioned against the "super app trap," which focuses on reaching a daily active user count of a billion as the ultimate goal. He argued that such a perspective is rooted in the mobile era. In contrast, he emphasized that, in the age of artificial intelligence, applications that provide significant benefits to industries and specific use cases are far more valuable than those judged solely by user metrics.
Addressing concerns about AI potentially displacing jobs, Li acknowledged the fear of widespread job loss but also highlighted the creation of new roles, especially in generative AI. "AI is evolving rapidly across industries, but it should be viewed as a co-pilot rather than a competitor," he stated, reinforcing that AI aims to enhance human work rather than replace it. This approach fosters increased efficiency and improved work quality.
Furthermore, Li pointed out the emergence of new job roles stemming from AI technologies, including data annotators and prompt engineers, exemplifying the evolving work landscape in this transformative era.
