LinkedIn is Utilizing Your Data to Train AI Models

If you’re using LinkedIn, be aware that the platform has automatically enrolled accounts for training generative AI models. According to 404Media, LinkedIn introduced a new privacy setting and an opt-out form alongside its updated privacy policy, which states that user data may be utilized to train AI models. TechCrunch has since noted that this policy has been revised.

LinkedIn's help page explains that generative AI is applied for features like writing assistance. To opt out, navigate to the Data Privacy section in your account settings, find “Data for Generative AI Improvement,” and switch the toggle to “off.” This action ensures that LinkedIn and its affiliates will not use your personal data or content for future model training, though it will not affect any training that has already occurred.

The FAQ related to AI training highlights that LinkedIn employs privacy-enhancing technologies to remove personal data from training sets and does not train its models on individuals located in the EU, EEA, or Switzerland.

While the setting specifically pertains to generative AI training, LinkedIn utilizes other machine learning tools for personalization and moderation, which do not involve content generation. To prevent your data from being used in this context as well, you’ll need to complete the LinkedIn Data Processing Objection Form.

This automatic opt-in for most LinkedIn users follows closely after Meta acknowledged that it had scraped non-private user data for model training dating back to 2007.
