Meta Introduces Generative AI Stickers and Enhanced AI Editing Features in Its Apps

At the Meta Connect event today, CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled exciting new generative AI sticker functionality for Meta’s messaging platforms. Leveraging the innovative image-generation model, Emu, users will soon be able to craft one-of-a-kind AI stickers in mere seconds across popular Meta apps such as WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, and Facebook Stories.

“Every day, people send hundreds of millions of stickers to convey emotions in their chats,” explained Zuckerberg. “Each conversation is unique, and people often want to express slightly different feelings. Currently, we only have a limited selection of stickers—now, thanks to Emu, you can simply type what you envision,” he added.

These AI stickers have successfully passed through internal testing at Meta and are set to launch broadly across its applications, alongside new AI editing tools for Instagram.

To create a sticker, users can enter a text prompt specifying the type of image they wish to generate. During a live demo on WhatsApp, Zuckerberg showcased creative prompts like “Hungarian sheep dog driving a 4×4.”

Initially, this feature will be accessible to English-speaking users, with rolling updates expected over the next month.

In addition to the sticker capabilities, Zuckerberg demonstrated AI editing features on personal photos, including an adorable baby picture and one of his dog, Beast, which he transformed into origami and cross-stitch styles using AI tools.

Meta plans to enhance user interaction by introducing functionalities that allow individuals to alter images or collaboratively generate new AI-art with friends. These upcoming features—Restyle and Backdrop—will also utilize Emu’s technology.

Restyle empowers users to reimagine an image's visual aesthetics by entering prompts like “watercolor” or more descriptive ones like “collage from magazines with torn edges,” as detailed in a Meta blog post. Backdrop, on the other hand, adapts the environment or background of an image through similar prompts.

To ensure transparency, Meta will mark AI-generated images, helping to prevent confusion between AI-created and human-made content. The company is also exploring methods for both visible and discreet markers.
