Meta is redefining how it labels content edited or modified by AI tools on Instagram, Facebook, and Threads. The "AI info" label will now be relocated to the post's menu, moving away from its previous placement directly beneath the user’s name.
The company assures users that the label will still be visible on content identified as fully generated by AI. While the label will now be less visible for posts edited or altered with AI tools, it will remain clearly displayed for those created entirely through AI prompts.
For completely AI-generated content, Meta will specify whether it received its label due to industry-shared signals or because the user self-disclosed this information, according to company statements.
This update, launching next week, aims to "better reflect the extent of AI used in content" across Meta's platforms. However, by making the AI info label less conspicuous, users may find it easier to be misled by AI-edited content, especially with the rapid advancement of editing technologies.
As generative AI is still a developing field, this isn’t the first adjustment Meta has made regarding content labeling. In July, the label transitioned from "Made with AI" to "AI info" after photographers voiced concerns that the label was being applied to genuine photos. At that time, Meta acknowledged that the original label phrasing was unclear, leading to misunderstandings about which images were generated by AI versus those merely edited with AI tools.
