Meta Shifts Focus Away from Celebrity Lookalike AI Chatbots

Meta has officially discontinued its AI chatbots that allowed users to interact with celebrity alter egos. Initially showcased at the Connect event last September, these chatbots have now been phased out.

This decision coincides with the launch of AI Studio, a new tool enabling creators in the US to develop their own personalized AI chatbots. A Meta spokesperson, Liz Sweeney, stated, “You can no longer interact with AI characters embodied by celebrities. We learned a lot from building them and Meta AI, and we aim to create a space where anyone, including celebrities, can develop their own AI.”

Initially, Meta introduced chatbots featuring personas like Charli D’Amelio as Coco, a dance enthusiast; Dwyane Wade as Victor, an Ironman triathlete; and Paris Hilton as Amber, a detective partner. While the company had plans to expand with bots for Bear Grylls, Chloe Kim, and Josh Richards, these additions never materialized.

Despite the setback with celebrity-themed bots, Meta remains optimistic about the future of AI chatbots. CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously discussed their potential in an interview, highlighting the integration of the Meta AI assistant across platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp.
