Meta Updates Label from ‘Made with AI’ to ‘AI Info’ to Highlight AI Utilization in Photos

After Meta introduced a “Made with AI” label for photos in May, photographers raised concerns that the social media platform was incorrectly tagging images edited with basic tools. In response to user feedback and confusion regarding the extent of AI involvement in these photos, Meta will now adopt the label “AI Info” across all its applications.

Meta acknowledged that the original label was misleading, as it suggested that an image was either solely created by AI or significantly involved AI technologies. The company stated, “Like others in the industry, we realized our labels often didn't align with users' expectations or provide sufficient context. For instance, some images featuring minor AI modifications, such as retouching, were labeled ‘Made with AI’ despite only minor efforts.”

Despite these changes, Meta’s underlying technology for detecting AI use in photos remains the same. The company continues to rely on technical metadata standards such as C2PA and IPTC to discern instances of AI tool usage. Consequently, images edited with tools like Adobe’s Generative AI Fill—designed to remove objects—might still receive the new “AI Info” label. However, Meta hopes this new designation clarifies that such images were not entirely crafted by AI.

“‘AI Info’ will cover content made and/or modified with AI. Our aim is to align better with users’ expectations while we collaborate with industry partners to enhance our processes,” stated Meta spokesperson Kate McLaughlin in an email.

The new label will not entirely address the issue of undisclosed AI-generated images, nor will it specify the extent of AI editing applied to an image. Thus, Meta and other social media platforms will need to establish fair guidelines that respect photographers who haven't altered their editing techniques, even if the tools they use include AI elements. Simultaneously, companies like Adobe should inform users that certain tools might lead to their images being tagged on various platforms.
