Microsoft, Amazon, and IBM Commit to Share AI Safety Guidelines for Their Models

Leading technology companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, and IBM have made significant commitments to enhance safety during the development of foundation models. At the AI Safety Summit held in Seoul, Korea, representatives from 16 organizations pledged to publish safety frameworks that outline how they assess and manage AI risks throughout the creation of their models. This initiative emphasizes a collective understanding that no AI model should be developed or deployed if the risks it poses cannot be effectively controlled or mitigated.

The pledge specifically addresses foundation models, often referred to as "frontier" models. These advanced AI systems are designed to be versatile, functioning across various applications by processing multiple forms of input, including images and text. Notable signatories include Meta, Samsung, Anthropic (the developer behind Claude), and xAI, founded by Elon Musk. Also joining the commitment were OpenAI, the Dubai-based Technology Innovation Institute, and Naver, a prominent Korean internet service provider. Zhipu AI, recognized for its development of China's ChatGPT counterpart, also signed the Frontier AI Safety Commitments, which were created in collaboration with the U.K. and Korean governments.

Lee Jong Ho, Korea’s Minister of Science and Information and Communication Technology, expressed optimism about the initiative, stating, “We are confident that the Frontier AI Safety Commitments will establish itself as a best practice in the global AI industry ecosystem. We hope that companies will continue engaging with governments, academia, and civil society, fostering cooperative networks with the AI Safety Institute moving forward.”

Each company that has committed to these principles will publicly disclose the risks associated with their foundation models and outline their strategies for ensuring safety prior to their deployment. The signatories are required to publish these findings in advance of the next AI safety summit scheduled for early 2025 in France. U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak emphasized the importance of these commitments, asserting, “These commitments ensure the world’s leading AI companies will provide transparency and accountability on their plans to develop safe AI.”

Designed to build upon the Bletchley Agreement forged at the inaugural AI Safety Summit last November, these commitments categorize and classify AI risks, establishing a robust framework for accountability. Beatriz Sanz Saiz, EY’s Global Consulting Data and AI Leader, welcomed this initiative, stating, “Providing transparency and accountability is essential in the development and implementation of trustworthy AI. While AI holds immense potential for both businesses and individuals, unlocking this potential necessitates a conscientious and ethical approach to its development.”

Sachin Agrawal, Managing Director of Zoho U.K., further underscored the importance of ethical considerations in AI, noting, “Companies that utilize AI should prioritize responsible data practices to strengthen customer trust. It’s crucial to adopt robust AI procedures that go beyond current privacy regulations, ensuring ethical balance between leveraging AI advantages and protecting customer data while maintaining full transparency in all practices.”

The collective commitment of these leading technology firms not only signals a proactive approach toward AI safety but also sets a precedent for ethical standards in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.
