Microsoft Launches Generative AI Certification Program for Professionals

As Big Tech navigates the ethics and implications of generative AI, the technology is already making its mark in the workforce. In response, Microsoft has introduced a new initiative aimed at equipping workers with essential AI skills. This program offers free coursework through LinkedIn and includes certification options.

Interestingly, while generative AI is designed to be user-friendly—facilitating content creation through everyday language—the courses will provide valuable insights on crafting effective prompts and introduce novices to the technology. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals to stay relevant in our rapidly evolving world.

Microsoft’s AI Skills Initiative, part of its Skills for Jobs program, features free courses developed by LinkedIn. These offerings include "the first Professional Certificate on Generative AI" in the online learning market, covering foundational AI concepts and responsible AI practices, ultimately leading to certification. Initially available in English, Microsoft plans to expand the program to include Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese in the coming months.

Additionally, the initiative includes a trainer toolkit aimed at educators, featuring digestible content and a dedicated AI course for teachers and trainers.

To further support AI education, Microsoft has launched the Generative AI Skills Grant Challenge, a collaboration with data.org and GitHub. This program seeks to empower historically marginalized populations by enabling nonprofit, social enterprise, and academic institutions to train the workforce in generative AI. Grant recipients will benefit from financial backing, collaborative learning opportunities, data training and guidance, as well as access to Microsoft events and cloud resources. Applications for the grant program are currently open, with a deadline of August 15th.
