Microsoft's AI image generator, Designer, has officially launched beyond its preview phase. Today, the company announced that this powerful service, utilizing OpenAI's DALL-E 3 model, is now available as a free app on Android, iOS, and Windows devices.
With the mobile app, anyone with a personal Microsoft account can create diverse images and designs on the go.
What's New in Microsoft Designer?
Since its initial release last year, Designer has become Microsoft's primary platform for creating graphics, including illustrations, social media posts, and brand kits, using text prompts. During the preview, free users accessed Designer via the web and Microsoft Edge. Subscribers to the Copilot Pro plan enjoyed enhanced features within Microsoft 365 apps like Word and PowerPoint.
Now, Microsoft has expanded Designer's availability with new features designed to simplify image creation and editing. Users can now access a variety of prompt templates filled with ideas, styles, and descriptions to help ignite their creativity. These templates enable users to experiment with effective prompts and achieve high-quality results.
“When you’re ready, you can share templates with friends or fellow creators,” said Sumit Chauhan, corporate VP for the Office product group at Microsoft, in a blog post. This community approach encourages collaboration and inspiration.
The refined homepage of Designer's mobile and web experience includes categorized options for creating avatars, emojis, stickers, greeting cards, and invitations. Users simply select a category and provide a text prompt, or use a template if available, to generate their content.
On the editing side, Designer now offers AI-generated image restyling and framing options, enhancing its capabilities for mobile users. Users can upload photos and transform them into different artistic styles like doodle, pop art, or papercraft. Previously, the tool had more limited editing functions, such as applying filters or removing backgrounds.
Additionally, a new background replacement feature will allow users to generate completely new backgrounds based on their vision.
Seamless Integration with Windows 11
In a significant upgrade, Microsoft will integrate Designer into the built-in Photos app of Windows 11, enabling users to edit their photos directly within the app. Currently, this integration is rolling out to Windows Insiders.
It's essential to note that free users, whether on the web or mobile platforms, will have limited access to Designer's features. For those seeking more content generation capabilities and enhanced features within Microsoft 365 apps, a Copilot Pro subscription is available for $20 per month.
“Designer offers 15 free daily boosts to create or edit AI-powered images and designs more efficiently. These boosts are automatically applied during use within both the Designer app and integrated Microsoft apps. An upgrade to Copilot Pro provides 100 boosts per day,” Chauhan added.
