AI Company Raises $200M to Accelerate Development of Self-Driving Trucks

Canadian company Waabi has secured an impressive $200 million in funding as it advances its mission to deploy self-driving trucks on the roads by next year. This oversubscribed Series B funding round was spearheaded by Uber alongside Khosla Ventures, and featured prominent investors such as Nvidia, Porsche, and Volvo. With this latest investment, Waabi has attracted a total of $280 million in just three years—a significant leap towards its goal to introduce generative AI-powered fully autonomous trucks in Texas by 2025.

Waabi’s growth stands in stark contrast to the setbacks faced by several companies in the autonomous trucking sector over the past few years, including the shutdown of Embark and TuSimple's exit from the U.S. market. This Toronto-based start-up credits its success to a groundbreaking method of integrating generative AI into real-world applications. Waabi’s innovative approach utilizes a cohesive end-to-end AI system that mimics human reasoning, enabling it to identify challenges that might elude even human cognition.

This strategic focus on AI diverges from the traditional methods adopted by many self-driving technology developers, who typically define potential problem scenarios and deploy fleets to gauge their performance in real-time. Waabi’s model emphasizes machine learning over extensive human input, potentially revolutionizing how autonomous systems are developed and validated.

In a parallel development, the U.K.-based AI firm Wayve also made headlines for its ambitious funding of $1 billion in 2024 to enhance self-driving technologies. This growing trend suggests a robust interest in AI-driven solutions that push the envelope of autonomous vehicle capabilities.

Waabi emphasizes several advantages to its AI-centric approach. Notably, the system requires significantly less training data and computational resources compared to traditional methods. Furthermore, the technology is designed to be fully interpretable, allowing for easier validation and verification. This efficiency is greatly enhanced by Waabi’s proprietary Waabi World closed-loop simulator, which minimizes the need for extensive on-road testing while ensuring a scalable and cost-effective development solution.

Raquel Urtasun, the founder and CEO of Waabi, articulated the profound implications of their technology: “Waabi World automatically generates all the scenarios a self-driving vehicle may encounter in the real world, testing the entire autonomy system with near-zero domain gap. This ensures that the AI system behaves in the simulation exactly as it would in reality when faced with the same situations.”

This latest funding not only paves the way for the launch of driverless operations in Texas but also supports the company’s plans for expansion into other regions. Waabi’s Driver technology is already being tested on public roads in Texas with safety drivers, following the recent establishment of a new terminal that will serve as the operational hub.
