Every software product must undergo quality assurance (QA) testing to ensure its effectiveness and reliability. This process typically involves a human tester creating a series of test cases and examining the software interface for bugs and other issues.
On Tuesday, MuukTest, a startup based in Raleigh, North Carolina, unveiled an innovative AI agent designed to automate the creation of these test cases significantly.
“From the beginning, our vision has been to automate software QA technology, making test creation as simple as a click,” said Ivan Barajas Vargas, co-founder and CEO of MuukTest. This new tool allows testers to evaluate every menu, button, and operation in the software user interface under various conditions, aiming to identify as many bugs as possible before the software is released.
CTO and co-founder Renan Ugalde highlighted Barajas Vargas’s 20 years of experience in software QA testing, which has been instrumental in training the AI agent to assist in developing test suites. They have leveraged a blend of AI technologies, including large language models, traditional machine learning, computer vision, and image recognition. “We’ve trained AI agents to mimic a QA tester’s thought process, enabling it to understand application context—such as recognizing menus and inputs, and knowing when to expect certain outcomes,” Ugalde explained.
Implementing reinforcement learning and drawing upon their extensive QA experience, the founders are on track to create a robust AI agent. While the term “AI agent” has become commonplace for software that aids specific tasks, there remains no standard definition. For MuukTest, the agent serves as a smart assistant, taking over some of the repetitive tasks traditionally performed by human QA testers.
Having immigrated from Mexico to the U.S. in 2011, Barajas Vargas honed his skills at Dell, while Ugalde built his career at IBM. In 2019, they teamed up to launch MuukTest, with the mission of minimizing the effort needed to generate and execute QA tests.
Initial versions of the solution utilized no-code platforms and algorithms to create tests. However, the latest generative AI product allows customers to simply specify the type of test suite they need, and MuukTest automatically generates it. Users can then execute the AI-generated tests with a single click, significantly streamlining the QA process.
MuukTest began to gain traction last year, even before the addition of AI capabilities, experiencing a remarkable 15x revenue growth compared to the previous year. With the new features, the founders believe they are poised for even more substantial growth. Having participated in MassChallenge, a well-known startup incubator in Massachusetts, MuukTest has successfully raised a total of $6 million through investments and grants. With a workforce comprising 36 employees and 10 contractors, Barajas Vargas stated that the company will maintain a conservative approach to spending.
Starting today, the new AI agent feature is now available to users.
