Notion, known for its popular note-taking app, has begun testing Notion AI, a new feature that utilizes generative AI for writing notes and other content. Tech media outlet had early access to the tool ahead of its announcement.
The interface is user-friendly. Users select the type of content they need help with, such as a “blog post,” “marketing email,” or “to-do list.” After providing a prompt, simply hit the blue “Generate” button, and the AI produces text in real-time. However, as seen in some of Tech media outlet’s examples, specificity in prompts yields better results. For instance, when asked to draft a blog post about the smartwatch industry, Notion AI referenced outdated models like the Apple Watch 4 and Samsung Galaxy Watch, focusing on a market snapshot from 2018 instead of the current landscape.
Notion's CEO, Ivan Zhao, emphasized that this feature is a work in progress, currently in alpha testing with no set release date. Interested users can sign up for a waitlist to gain access. Zhao envisions Notion AI as a tool to help overcome the “cold start” challenge many face when beginning to write. While Notion AI isn't designed to produce publish-ready content immediately, it can generate a first draft that users can refine into a polished piece. The software also aids in brainstorming and translating existing text.
“Sometimes we all get stuck, and in those moments, Notion AI can assist you in writing,” the company explained in a brief promotional video. Currently, Notion AI is available for free during this soft launch, but future pricing is anticipated as the feature evolves, with plans to allow more users as the tool improves.
