Nvidia's GTC 2024 event returns in person at the San Jose Convention Center from March 18 to March 21, expecting over 16,000 in-person attendees and around 300,000 online participants. This year’s growth, nearly double the attendance from its last in-person event, underscores the rapid advancement in AI technology, according to Greg Estes, Nvidia's vice president of developer programs.
“Nvidia's position has shifted significantly since 2019,” Estes noted. “With heightened expectations and excitement surrounding our innovations, our visibility in the tech world has escalated.”
Nvidia, recognized as a leader in generative AI, is experiencing increased demand for its data center chips and GPUs. The company's stock has surged 84% this year, elevating its market value to $2.21 trillion, making it one of the top five most valuable tech companies globally.
Building on lessons from pandemic-driven online events, Nvidia will integrate a digital component to the 2024 GTC, emphasizing AI advancements.
Keynote Highlights
Nvidia's CEO, Jensen Huang, will deliver a flagship keynote on March 18 in the SAP Center, a venue typically reserved for concerts due to its larger capacity. The keynote will last about two hours and is expected to attract significant attention, with numerous partners and sponsors in attendance.
"This event will engage broader audiences than ever before," Estes remarked, noting the impact of having Jim Cramer of CNBC broadcast live from GTC.
Professional Certification in Generative AI
Nvidia will introduce a new professional certification in generative AI, enabling developers and career professionals to establish their credibility in this transformative field. This certification, launching at GTC, includes two associate-level tracks focused on large language models and multimodal workflows.
“Generative AI is now vital as industries strive to leverage its capabilities,” Huang stated, emphasizing the global narrative around this technology.
During GTC, in-person attendees can also access recommended training to prepare for certification exams. “Our aim is to empower organizations to enhance their workforce's expertise in generative AI,” Estes added.
Panels and Presentations
The event will feature 1,700 presenters across more than 900 sessions, including a panel I will moderate on "Digitalizing the World’s Largest Industries With OpenUSD and Generative AI." Nvidia’s Omniverse platform is key to creating digital twins, which are essential for advancing the industrial metaverse.
Community Engagement and Responsible AI Conversations
A significant generative AI installation by artist Refik Anadol will be showcased, while discussions on responsible AI practices and community involvement will take center stage. Estes emphasized the importance of diverse voices in navigating the complexities of AI's societal role and its impact on job creation and transformation.
“Open dialogue is crucial as we explore AI’s effects on employment and technology's broader role,” he stated.
Future Developments and Sovereign AI
Huang will address the emergence of sovereign AI—where organizations prioritize data sovereignty—impacting data center structures and operational models. “Governments increasingly want to maintain data control within their borders, enhancing local AI capabilities,” Estes explained.
With nearly five million AI developers and 18,000 startups in Nvidia’s program, the event will also highlight charitable activities and community initiatives.
I'm eager to return to GTC and witness the forefront of AI innovation first-hand, as interest in AI startups continues to soar with hundreds of venture capitalists expected at the event. More than 700 participants have signed up for "Dinner With Strangers," reflecting the collaborative spirit of this year's gathering.
