NVIDIA is making strides in integrating generative AI into non-playable characters (NPCs) in video games. With a newly announced partnership with Ubisoft, the development of AI-driven NPCs aims to enhance player experiences in modern gaming.
Ubisoft has utilized NVIDIA’s Avatar Cloud Engine (ACE) technology to create innovative "NEO NPCs," collaborating with Inworld AI, experts in dynamic NPC design. These characters avoid repetitive dialogue and exhibit awareness of their surroundings, even amidst chaotic scenarios.
NEO NPCs engage with players, the environment, and other in-game characters in real time, opening up exciting opportunities for emergent storytelling. Ubisoft’s narrative team has crafted detailed backgrounds, knowledge bases, and conversational styles for two NPCs as part of a proof of concept. These characters feature environmental and contextual awareness, as well as conversational memory. NVIDIA emphasizes their strengths in collaboration and strategic decision-making.
Incorporating Audio2Face technology, these NPCs can display realistic facial animations and lip syncing, further enhancing immersion in the game world. While NVIDIA hasn't confirmed when this technology will debut in Ubisoft titles, it's likely part of their future plans. Imagine interacting with an NPC who comments on your heroic acts or chaotic decisions—what a thrilling addition to gameplay!
In addition to NPC innovations, NVIDIA recently announced its next generation of GPUs, designed for training large language models. The new Blackwell chips are touted to be seven to 30 times faster than the previous H100 series, while consuming 25 times less power, marking a significant leap in performance and efficiency.
