One year ago, OpenAI launched ChatGPT, a web app that would soon become one of the most significant tech phenomenons in recent history. While it wasn’t the first AI chatbot or large language model available online, its impressive language capabilities quickly caught the attention of users across the globe.
In the months that followed, responses varied widely, with some heralding the arrival of sentient artificial intelligence, while others placed their faith in OpenAI as a beacon of hope for humanity. This ongoing debate has been fueled by developments at OpenAI and numerous conspiracy theories that have emerged around the technology.
The past year with ChatGPT and its various counterparts has demonstrated that these extreme viewpoints are not entirely valid. While ChatGPT and generative AI have undoubtedly made an impact on the world, the disruptions have manifested in ways that are still unraveling. A clear example is its influence during the SAG-AFTRA strikes. Additionally, the U.S. federal government has started focusing on AI, culminating in an executive order aimed at addressing its implications. Some reactions have been merely knee-jerk responses, while others mark significant steps towards a genuinely AI-driven future.
Yet, life goes on much as it did before. According to a Pew survey from May 2023, 58% of U.S. residents had heard of ChatGPT, but only 14% had tried it. Although these numbers may have since changed, the user base appears to have shrunk over time rather than expanded. It’s worth noting that although ChatGPT was the fastest-growing tech product initially, it was soon surpassed by Threads just a few months later. And even within the writing and editing industry, the actual impact of ChatGPT has been less pronounced than many anticipated.
Let me be clear: ChatGPT made a significant splash upon its arrival and will continue to shape the future. The extent of its effects remains uncertain. While chatbots bring AI to the forefront, the true potential lies in integrating this technology into everyday products and services.
Will November 2022 be marked as a pivotal moment in technology history or simply an overhyped footnote? A year in, I still find myself pondering this question. Nevertheless, it fuels my excitement for what lies ahead.
