OpenAI founder and CEO Sam Altman addressed Elon Musk’s latest foray into the AI industry with skepticism during OpenAI's inaugural Dev Day press briefing on Monday.
Musk recently announced his new AI product, Grok, from his company xAI, adding fuel to an already tense rivalry.
When asked about Musk's timing, Altman dismissively remarked, “Elon’s gonna Elon,” highlighting the escalating friction between the two as they both aim to dominate the generative AI market.
A Bitter Divide
Musk was an early investor in OpenAI, contributing significant funding in 2015 alongside other tech leaders such as Reid Hoffman. This investment attracted top AI talent from established companies and prestigious universities.
However, tensions surfaced in 2018 when Musk sought control over OpenAI to accelerate its progress, a proposal that Altman and the board rejected. Following this fallout, Musk withdrew much of his funding, asserting in a CNBC interview, “I am the reason OpenAI exists. It wouldn’t exist without me.”
Musk Tries to Upstage OpenAI
Days before OpenAI's developer conference, Musk unveiled xAI and its chatbot Grok, seemingly aiming to overshadow Altman’s announcements. Musk tweeted about Grok right before Altman took the stage, prompting speculation about the competitiveness of OpenAI’s flagship product, ChatGPT.
OpenAI Unfazed
Despite Musk's antics, Altman remained unruffled, showcasing OpenAI's ambitious offerings like GPT-4 Turbo and Assistant API. These advancements signal OpenAI's intent to maintain its lead in the AI race, with Altman's nonchalant dismissal of Musk's tactics suggesting that OpenAI will set the pace in this rapidly evolving field.
While Musk focuses on real-time data and user-friendly humor with Grok, an approach that differentiates it from the often serious tone of competitors, his virtually unlimited resources ensure xAI will be a contender.
As Altman continues to innovate and push AI boundaries, the ongoing rivalry between these two visionaries guarantees that the race to dominate AI will only grow more intense.
