A week after partnering with the Financial Times, OpenAI has announced a collaboration with Stack Overflow, an open platform for discussing and voting on coding challenges, aimed at enhancing its models' capabilities in programming tasks.
The specific terms of this partnership remain undisclosed, but OpenAI developers will gain access to Stack Overflow’s curated technical knowledge, code, and community resources to boost model performance. Both companies confirmed that this collaboration will improve ChatGPT's programming capabilities.
Since the rise of ChatGPT, Stack Overflow has experienced a decline in traffic as programmers increasingly rely on the AI to complete code and troubleshoot issues. This shift has diminished the platform's traditional role as a go-to resource for coding challenges.
This partnership follows Stack Overflow's decision to prohibit ChatGPT-generated content over concerns regarding inaccurate information. Now, the platform is pivoting to enhance its offerings.
What to Expect from the OpenAI-Stack Overflow Partnership
Stack Overflow has established a subscription-based API service called OverflowAPI, providing continuous access to its extensive public datasets accumulated over the last 15 years. The first customer for this API is Google, which has secured data for its Gemini model family.
Through this new partnership, OpenAI developers will utilize this API along with the technical content it offers, enabling enhancements for models in the GPT-4 family. This collaboration ensures that ChatGPT will produce improved coding-related answers backed by vetted knowledge and feedback from the Stack Overflow community.
To address credibility concerns, every ChatGPT response leveraging Stack Overflow data will link back to the most relevant posts that influenced the summarized answer, allowing users to seek further information directly on the platform.
Beyond data sharing, Stack Overflow will also integrate OpenAI’s models to advance OverflowAI, a suite of generative AI capabilities for the public site and its enterprise solution, Stack Overflow for Teams. Collaborating with Google has also aided the development of generative AI features for their knowledge platform, with the first integrations expected before mid-2024.
“Stack Overflow is the world’s largest developer community, with over 59 million questions and answers. Through our partnership with OpenAI, we aim to redefine the developer experience, enhancing efficiency and collaboration through community-driven, high-quality data and AI advancements,” said Stack Overflow CEO Prashanth Chandrasekar.
“Our goal with OverflowAPI and our commitment to advancing socially responsible AI is to establish standards for vetted, trustworthy, and precise data that serve as the foundation for innovative technology solutions,” he added.
OpenAI's Data-Gathering Efforts
This partnership reflects OpenAI's ongoing strategy to enrich its models with credible data sources. Just one week prior, OpenAI joined forces with the Financial Times to broaden the range of journalistic content accessible through ChatGPT.
Similar licensing agreements have been made with other organizations, including the Associated Press, German media giant Axel Springer, and the American Journalism Project. Reports from January indicated that OpenAI is investing between $1 million and $5 million in licensing deals with media companies.
