OpenAI has begun rolling out its advanced Voice Mode feature, allowing select paying ChatGPT users to engage in more natural conversations with the AI chatbot. By fall 2023, all ChatGPT Plus members are expected to have access to this enhanced tool.
In an announcement on X, OpenAI described the advanced Voice Mode as capable of facilitating "more natural, real-time conversations," enabling users to interrupt seamlessly while also sensing and responding to their emotions.
Voice conversation support was introduced in September, with a public demo of the advanced version conducted in May. The new ChatGPT-4o utilizes a single multimodal model for voice interactions, streamlining communication and reducing latency compared to the previous solution, which relied on three separate models.
However, the initial demo faced criticism due to the voice option closely resembling that of actress Scarlett Johansson, known for voicing the AI character Samantha in the film Her. Following the backlash, the release of the advanced Voice Mode was postponed, and OpenAI clarified that the voice actor was not intentionally emulating Johansson's performance. Consequently, the similar-sounding voice has been removed from the feature.
