OpenAI Reports ChatGPT Reaches 200 Million Users: A Milestone in AI Engagement

OpenAI has revealed that its popular product, ChatGPT, now boasts over 200 million active weekly users—doubling the figure from just ten months ago. Furthermore, an impressive 92% of Fortune 500 companies are now utilizing its offerings, demonstrating significant adoption among enterprises and decision-makers.

While it remains unclear how many of these companies specifically use ChatGPT compared to other OpenAI tools such as Whisper, Codex, or APIs, the trend indicates that OpenAI is making substantial inroads in corporate America. ChatGPT Enterprise recently marked its first anniversary, while ChatGPT itself approaches its second anniversary. In February 2023, analysts viewed ChatGPT as the fastest tech product to reach 100 million users; however, OpenAI has yet to independently confirm this milestone.

Adam Goldberg, OpenAI’s Go-to-Market Team Lead for Financial Services & Insurance, recently celebrated the ChatGPT Enterprise milestone on LinkedIn, highlighting its impact on AI strategies among customers. He noted that PwC, for instance, has equipped every employee in their US and UK offices with an AI assistant. According to Toby, the AI leader for PwC's UK Deals business, employees initially engage with ChatGPT for micro-tasks like company research and document summarization. As they become more familiar with the tool, they begin incorporating AI into more complex workflows and projects.

This announcement comes as The Information reports a significant uptick in usage of Meta’s Llama-powered AI chatbot across its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. However, the use cases for Meta AI and OpenAI's ChatGPT differ substantially. Meta's offering primarily serves as a casual, consumer-friendly product integrated into existing applications, while ChatGPT stands out as a dedicated tool designed for students and business professionals.

Despite its successes, OpenAI faces fierce competition in the chatbot landscape, with numerous powerful proprietary models and open-source alternatives emerging regularly. As of November 2023, during its inaugural "Dev Day" developer conference in San Francisco, OpenAI reported 100 million active weekly users, where it also introduced the GPT Store and custom GPT features.
