Oracle is making a significant commitment to the future of technology in Japan, with plans to invest over $8 billion over the next decade. This major investment is designed to enhance the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and to accommodate the increasing demand for cloud computing services. As businesses in Asia and Oceania express a strong preference for local, sovereign solutions, Oracle is pledging to assist local customers in achieving their digital sovereignty objectives.
As part of this initiative, Oracle intends to hire a dedicated team of Japanese personnel and engineers to bolster local AI and cloud operations. This strategic move will not only enhance the company's presence in Japan but also improve access to public cloud services in major cities like Tokyo and Osaka.
Another key component of Oracle’s expansion is the rollout of Oracle Alloy in Japan. This innovative platform enables businesses to offer cloud services according to their specific needs, facilitating local governments and enterprises in shifting their mission-critical workloads to the Oracle Cloud. This approach embraces sovereign AI solutions, which are tailored to meet regulatory and sovereignty requirements.
Toshimitsu Misawa, the corporate executive officer and president of Oracle Corp. Japan, stated, “We are dedicated to meeting our customers and partners where they are in their cloud journey. By growing our cloud footprint and providing a team to support sovereign operations in Japan, we are giving our customers and partners the opportunity to innovate with AI and other cloud services while supporting their regulatory and sovereignty requirements.”
In addition to its own expansion, Oracle is collaborating with Fujitsu to offer tailored cloud and AI services. This partnership will see Fujitsu deploy Oracle Alloy, ensuring that Japanese customers have seamless access to OCI services. Kazushi Koga, Fujitsu’s senior executive vice president, remarked, “Our collaboration with Oracle positions us to deliver a sovereign cloud offering that enables hyperscale functionality and digital sovereignty capabilities while ensuring operational governance by Fujitsu.”
This announcement follows a recent initiative from Microsoft, which unveiled plans to invest $2.9 billion to expand its local AI efforts and establish a new research lab in Tokyo. As industry leaders ramp up their investments in cloud technology and AI, the landscape for digital innovation in Japan is set to evolve dramatically over the coming years.
