OpenAI is actively exploring the potential implications of its large language models (LLMs) in the realm of biological threats. Through a recent study, the organization investigated whether its advanced LLM, GPT-4, could assist users in the creation of bioweapons. The findings were revealing: GPT-4 provided only a “mild uplift” in users' efforts to develop such threats.
In this study, OpenAI engaged 100 biology experts—comprising both doctoral holders and students—to undertake various tasks involved in the bioweapons creation process. These tasks ranged from brainstorming concepts to acquisition, magnification, formulation, and release. Participants were divided into two groups; one group utilized the internet solely, while the other had access to both the internet and GPT-4. The experiment aimed to measure performance across several metrics including accuracy, completeness, innovation, time taken, and the perceived difficulty of the tasks.
Results indicated that GPT-4's contributions were not substantial enough to significantly enhance the creation of biological weapons. In fact, the model occasionally refused certain inputs or provided erroneous outputs. OpenAI noted that while the observed uplift was minimal and inconclusive, it marks the beginning of ongoing research and discussions about what constitutes a meaningful increase in risk regarding the misuse of AI.
The implications of this research extend beyond mere academic curiosity. OpenAI suggested that their findings could serve as a foundation for a “tripwire” – an early warning system designed to detect potential bioweapons threats. However, the organization cautioned that advancements in future AI systems could pose greater risks. “Given the current pace of progress in frontier AI systems, it seems possible that future systems could provide sizable benefits to malicious actors,” the study elaborated.
Concerns regarding the existential risks associated with AI, particularly the potential misapplication of language models, have been mounting among experts and lawmakers alike. These fears were intensified last October when a study from the Rand Corporation indicated that chatbots like ChatGPT could facilitate the planning of biological attacks.
In response to these heightened concerns, OpenAI is adopting a more cautious stance. The organization has recently introduced its Preparedness Framework, which aims to evaluate a model's safety prior to deployment.
