Picsart and Getty Launch AI Image Generator Exclusively Trained on Licensed Content

Getty Images has joined forces with Picsart, a widely-used photo-editing platform, to launch an AI image generator exclusively trained on licensed stock images. This initiative is positioned as a "responsible, commercially safe" alternative to existing AI image generation platforms. Images produced by this model come with full commercial rights, alleviating concerns about AI-generated content potentially infringing copyright laws.

Available solely to paid Picsart subscribers, this service aims to prioritize creator rights and ownership. This approach differs from Adobe's Firefly AI model, which, although trained on stock images, includes content not solely licensed. Adobe faced criticism for changing its terms of service to permit the use of user-generated content for training AI, prompting a swift revision following public backlash.

By relying exclusively on fully licensed stock images, Picsart and Getty aim to mitigate similar concerns from their users, ensuring that individual creators' works cannot be used to train the AI model without permission. "It allows creators to bring their visions to life while upholding the highest standards of commercial safety," noted Grant Farhall, Chief Product Officer at Getty Images, in a blog post.

Moreover, Getty assures that it is fairly compensating the creators of the licensed content used in the dataset on an annual basis, alleviating concerns about the potential exploitation of professional photographers' work.
