Procreate Takes Stand Against Generative AI, Prioritizing Human Creativity
The well-known iPad design app Procreate is firmly opposing generative AI, pledging never to integrate AI features into its platform. On its website, Procreate acknowledged that while machine learning holds significant potential, the trajectory of generative AI contradicts its values and vision for creativity.
Procreate emphasizes that it refuses to pursue a technology perceived as a threat to human artistry, even if this decision might suggest a risk of falling behind in the industry.
In a passionate video statement shared on X, Procreate CEO James Cuda expressed his strong disapproval of generative AI. “I really f hate generative AI,” he stated. “I’m deeply concerned about its impact on the industry and the challenges it poses to artists. We will not be introducing any generative AI into our products. Our innovations are always grounded in the belief that humans are the creators.”
The company's position has garnered widespread support from digital artists, who appreciate Procreate's commitment to traditional artistry amidst a growing trend of AI adoption by other platforms. For example, Clip Studio Paint faced significant backlash from its community and ultimately decided to retract its plans for an AI-driven image generator in 2022.
Meanwhile, Adobe—home to one of the most recognized suites of design tools—has rolled out several generative AI features. However, the company faced criticism when their updated terms of service seemed to suggest training AI models using user-generated content. Adobe later clarified that it does not utilize customer content for AI training purposes.
As digital art platforms increasingly adopt AI technologies, Procreate’s decision stands out in sharp contrast. The appreciation from artists and designers may encourage other companies to reconsider their approach.
“We may not know how this narrative unfolds, but we believe we are on the right path—championing and supporting human creativity,” Cuda concluded.
