Qualcomm Launches Cutting-Edge AI and Connectivity Chips at Mobile World Congress 2023

Qualcomm recently revealed an innovative array of AI, 5G, and Wi-Fi technologies at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, emphasizing a new era of intelligent computing that aims to reshape industries, devices, and consumer experiences.

On-Device AI Revolution

The launch is driven by the recent Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Snapdragon X Elite, with devices from Samsung Galaxy, Xiaomi, OPPO, and others debuting soon. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon highlighted the transformative power of hybrid generative AI—combining on-device processing with cloud capabilities for enhanced personalization, privacy, and efficiency.

Key Highlights from MWC:

1. Qualcomm AI Hub

This hub boasts over 75 pre-optimized AI models, enabling developers to easily integrate AI capabilities into their applications. This streamlines deployment on devices powered by Snapdragon platforms, leading to quicker product launches and enhanced user experiences.

Ignacio Contreras, Senior Director at Qualcomm, explained that their goal is to empower diverse devices—such as PCs, cars, and industrial IoT—with advanced connectivity and AI, enhancing productivity and user experience.

2. Groundbreaking AI Demonstrations

Qualcomm is showcasing cutting-edge AI research, including the first large multimodal model running on an Android device and on-device AI applications on Windows PCs. The economic potential of generative AI is significant, with projections estimating an annual contribution of $2.6 to $4.4 trillion across sectors.

Durga Malladi, Senior Vice President at Qualcomm, noted that the AI Hub will significantly ease application development, facilitating faster, more reliable, and private experiences.

3. Advanced On-Device AI Functionality

Contreras emphasized the immediacy and reliability of on-device AI, which operates independently of reliant server connections. By harnessing integrated sensors, devices can deliver highly personalized responses and experiences. The Qualcomm NPU, GPU, or CPU can be utilized as needed, enhancing 5G and Wi-Fi performance for applications like streaming and conferencing.

4. AI-Powered PCs Coming Soon

AI-enhanced PC models will be available shortly, featuring Qualcomm’s research demonstration of a 7+ billion parameter large multimodal model that can interact with audio inputs. Flagship smartphones such as the HONOR Magic6 Pro, OPPO X7 Ultra, and Xiaomi 14 Pro will also showcase new generative AI features, enhancing creativity and productivity.

5. Snapdragon X80 5G Modem-RF System

Described as the most advanced 5G modem platform, the Snapdragon X80 incorporates groundbreaking 5G-Advanced capabilities and integrates satellite communications support for wider connectivity. 6. Qualcomm FastConnect 7900

Additionally, in the consumer IoT space, Qualcomm is showcasing the Humane AI Pin, a conversational device that runs on the Snapdragon platform, providing AI access in an innovative, screenless form.
