Tech startup Rabbit has launched the r1, an AI-powered companion device designed to handle various digital tasks for users.
Based in Los Angeles, Rabbit secured $30 million in funding for this initiative and is showcasing the r1 at CES 2024, the prominent tech trade show in Las Vegas.
Introducing r1: Your AI Companion
The r1 aims to simplify digital interactions by bridging human intent with device functionality. This groundbreaking device is the first to utilize Rabbit OS, an operating system that transforms the online experience by enabling seamless navigation across multiple applications through natural language commands.
Cutting-Edge Technology
Powered by the proprietary Large Action Model (LAM), r1 learns and replicates user actions, streamlining complex tasks across various interfaces. Jesse Lyu, CEO of Rabbit, stated, “We’re ushering in a new era of human-device interaction where AI doesn’t just understand natural language; it performs actions based on users’ intentions to accomplish tasks.”
Revolutionizing Digital Errands
Rabbit OS, together with LAM, enhances users' online experiences with “rabbits” – personal AI agents that perform a range of tasks. Unlike typical voice assistants, which handle basic requests like turning on lights or checking the weather, Rabbit OS can manage extensive digital errands. These include everything from quickly retrieving current information to conducting detailed research on travel options or filling virtual grocery carts for checkout.
Seamless Task Execution
The Large Action Model forms the core of r1 functionality, allowing it to understand and execute user-friendly actions across mobile and desktop platforms. By observing user behavior, LAM eliminates the need for intricate integrations like APIs, enabling fluid task execution without the hassle of downloading multiple applications.
The 'Rabbit Hole' Cloud Hub
Integrated within Rabbit OS is a cloud hub named “rabbit hole,” where users can grant access to their apps. Importantly, Rabbit OS performs tasks with user consent, ensuring personal data remains secure without storing information or requiring proxy accounts.
Design and Connectivity
The r1, developed in collaboration with Teenage Engineering, features an intuitive design inspired by retro gadgets like the Tamagotchi. Its compact format includes a 2.88-inch touchscreen, a push-to-talk button, a scroll wheel for navigation, and a 360-degree rotating camera called “rabbit eye” for video calls and advanced computer vision applications.
As a standalone device, r1 offers Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity, powered by a MediaTek Helio P35 processor, with 4 GB of memory, 128 GB of storage, and a USB-C port. The design emphasizes user privacy, ensuring the microphone and camera activate only when users initiate interactions.
Funding and Future Prospects
Rabbit's $30 million funding, raised in the fourth quarter of 2023, comes from notable investors including Khosla Ventures, Synergis Capital, and Kakao Investment.
