Talks to reinstate co-founder and former CEO Sam Altman at OpenAI have reportedly stalled. According to multiple sources, the board has appointed Emmett Shear, co-founder of Twitch, as OpenAI's new interim CEO. This decision was communicated internally by Ilya Sutskever, co-founder and board director.
Shear plans to take significant steps as CEO, including hiring an independent investigator to assess the circumstances surrounding recent events and reforming the leadership team in response to recent departures. He expressed a willingness to implement necessary changes, even advocating for substantial governance reforms, depending on the investigation's findings.
Altman was initially dismissed due to "a breakdown in communication between Sam and the board," as stated in an internal memo. Following his departure, several key personnel, including co-founder Greg Brockman, who was ousted as board chairman, resigned. Many of these former employees may join Altman in new ventures aimed at developing AI technology, including a chip to compete with NVIDIA and AI-centric hardware in partnership with former Apple designer Jony Ive.
Moreover, numerous OpenAI employees have expressed their intent to leave the company, with interest in joining Altman's potential new startup or other competing firms, including Google.
On Monday, a significant portion of OpenAI's staff, numbering 505, called for the board's resignation. This letter was endorsed by notable figures like former interim CEO Mira Murati and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever. The signees threatened to join the new Microsoft subsidiary overseen by Altman and Brockman unless the existing board resigned and new independent directors were appointed, along with the reinstatement of Altman and Brockman.
While there were discussions about reversing Altman's firing, it was reported that he wanted the current board to step down and for OpenAI to issue a public apology. Ultimately, this situation remains unresolved, raising questions about the future of those who departed with Altman and the impact of these developments on the progress of GPT-5 and other initiatives.
