Sam Altman Rejoins OpenAI Board Amid Leadership Shake-up
Sam Altman has returned to the OpenAI board nearly four months after his brief ousting as CEO. While he resumed his role as the AI company's top executive in November, a temporary board managed his return and conducted an investigation into his conduct. This investigation is now complete, and OpenAI has announced the addition of three new members to its board of directors: Fidji Simo, CEO of Instacart and former Meta executive; Nicole Seligman, former Sony executive; and Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann, ex-CEO of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Current board members, including Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor, economist Larry Summers, and OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman, continue in their roles, with Taylor remaining as chair.
This news follows a tumultuous period for OpenAI, triggered by Altman’s abrupt removal last fall. OpenAI also released a summary of findings from WilmerHale, the law firm engaged to investigate the circumstances surrounding Altman’s firing. The report clarified that the prior board's decision was not based on concerns regarding product safety, development pace, finances, or communications with investors and partners. Instead, it stemmed from a breakdown of trust between the previous board and Altman.
WilmerHale determined that Altman was dismissed without prior notice to key stakeholders and without the opportunity to address any concerns. The investigation involved a thorough review of over 30,000 documents and multiple interviews with OpenAI staff, including former board members.
This return marks an important chapter for OpenAI as it continues to navigate challenges in the AI landscape while focusing on transparency and trust within its leadership.
