Samsung Galaxy Phones Introduce Real-Time Translation for Calls and Texts

At Samsung’s launch event today, the tech giant unveiled its AI-driven Galaxy S24 smartphones, highlighting a revolutionary Live Translation feature designed to enhance calling experiences. This innovative feature, part of several new translation tools for the Galaxy S24 line, enables users to make or receive calls in a language they don’t understand, providing real-time translations both audibly and visually on their screens.

During the Unpacked event, Samsung showcased this cutting-edge technology, demonstrating how a user could effortlessly book a restaurant reservation without speaking Spanish. Utilizing the native Call app, the feature immediately translated the caller's words after each interaction. The person on the other end could reply in Spanish, which would be translated back into the caller’s language, English, fostering smoother communication.

“It’s like having a personal interpreter during your calls,” remarked Drew Blackard, Samsung's VP of Product Management.

According to Samsung, the live translation feature will support audio and text translations for up to 13 languages. Importantly, all translations occur on-device, ensuring that user privacy is upheld during phone calls.

Moreover, the system is designed to remember individual language preferences and the languages spoken by your contacts, eliminating the need for manual adjustments before each conversation. This functionality is especially beneficial for those who frequently make international calls or travel abroad.

Beyond voice calls, the translation capabilities will extend to seamless verbal and text exchanges during conversations, enhancing overall communication.

In addition, Samsung is integrating translation options into the Samsung keyboard. This feature allows users to translate words and phrases directly as they type. The smart keyboard will automatically detect the language being used, ensuring messages are accurately translated into the recipient’s preferred language. This can be particularly advantageous even for conversations where both parties share a language but prefer communicating in their native dialects.

Samsung also allows users to choose different communication styles, offering “casual” language for friendly chats, more formal tones for professional interactions, and even playful options like “excited” or Shakespearean styles for those lighthearted moments.

Similar to live spoken translations, these keyboard translations leverage Google’s advanced Gemini Nano AI model to ensure efficient performance.

With the Galaxy S24, Samsung is setting a new standard for communication, blending convenience with cutting-edge technology.
