Google's advanced generative AI model family, Gemini, is heading to Samsung's latest flagship smartphone — the Galaxy S24. This exciting announcement was made during the Galaxy S24's unveiling event this afternoon.
The Galaxy S24 will feature Gemini Pro, a versatile mid-range model engineered to enhance Samsung's Notes, Voice Recorder, and Keyboard applications. According to Google, this integration will provide users with “better summarization features.” For example, users can record a lecture using Voice Recorder and receive a concise summary of the most important points covered.
Additionally, Gemini Nano — a more compact and efficient variant — will introduce a innovative feature in Google Messages called Magic Compose. This tool can generate messages in various tones, such as “excited,” “formal,” and “lyrical,” all while operating locally without an internet connection.
It’s significant to note that the Galaxy S24 is only the second Android device to utilize the Gemini Nano model, following Google’s Pixel 8 Pro. On the Pixel 8 Pro, Nano powers features such as an AI summarizer in the Recorder app and suggested replies in Google’s Gboard keyboard.
Beyond Gemini, the Galaxy S24 will also harness Google’s Imagen 2 text-to-image model, enhancing photo editing capabilities in the Galaxy S24 Gallery app. Imagen 2, which debuted at Google I/O last May, offers a feature called Generative Edit that can seamlessly fill in parts of images based on their surrounding context.
Furthermore, Google revealed that Samsung will be among the first to test Gemini Ultra, the most powerful version of the Gemini model, prior to its wider release for developers and enterprises later this year. However, details on how Ultra will be utilized on the Galaxy S24 or other Samsung devices remain undisclosed.
Last year, Google announced that Android users would soon access Gemini through Bard, alongside integration with Google Assistant on Pixel devices. As of now, it’s unclear whether Galaxy S24 users will receive similar Assistant and Bard enhancements. We hope to uncover more information during today’s Galaxy S24 press conference.
