SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son: Focus on Developing High-Performance Large AI That Can Process Massive Learning Data

On October 6th, reports from Kyodo News highlighted a recent speech by Masayoshi Son, the Chairman and CEO of SoftBank Group, during a company event on October 3rd. Son emphasized a key belief regarding generative AI, stating, “Only the best have value in competition.” He underscored SoftBank’s commitment to developing high-performance large AI systems capable of processing vast amounts of learning data.

SoftBank is positioning AI as the cornerstone of its business strategy, investing in related companies through initiatives like the SoftBank Vision Fund. Son also noted the efforts of Japanese firms developing lightweight generative AI designed to minimize data and energy consumption, describing this as a "beautifully Japanese endeavor" albeit a limited success.

He praised OpenAI's recently launched model, which features reasoning capabilities, stating, “This evolution gives the model the ability to think, marking a significant leap forward.” Son predicted that AI with human-like capabilities will emerge within the next 2 to 3 years, while superintelligent AI (ASI) that surpasses human intelligence by a factor of ten thousand could materialize within the next decade.
