It appears that Spotify's highly anticipated “Superpremium” offering is gearing up for a launch. Chris Messina has uncovered references in the Spotify app’s code indicating that the Superpremium service now boasts an eye-catching logo and an expanded array of features, surpassing the long-awaited 24-bit lossless audio. This broader feature set is expected to include new AI playlist generation tools, advanced mixing capabilities, extended audiobook listening hours, and a personalized feature dubbed “Your Sound Capsule.”
Earlier this week, Messina also highlighted Spotify's development of AI playlists, which would empower users to create tailor-made playlists based on specific prompts. Although Spotify chose not to confirm the feature's development at that time, they refrained from commenting on any potential new offerings.
Interestingly, mentions of the Superpremium brand have surfaced in the app’s code previously.
A few weeks ago, Reddit user Hypixely suggested that the new, premium tier could be priced at $19.99 per month, referencing screenshots from Spotify’s code. This tier would include the AI playlists as well as lossless audio, which has been removed from the previous “HiFi” label that Spotify introduced years ago but has yet to launch fully.
When asked about the delay during Spotify’s Q2 earnings call, CEO Daniel Ek stated, “HiFi remains valuable, but it likely appeals to more dedicated streaming enthusiasts. We’re interested in exploring ways to utilize it to enhance our overall value, but there’s nothing to announce at this moment.” This implies a potential shift in strategy where HiFi could be used to justify future price increases, yet it's reimagined to appeal to a wider audience.
In addition to the lossless audio, Hypixely also discovered that Superpremium users would have the ability to filter their library by mood, activity, or genre. Messina confirmed this, noting additional filtering options like vibe and beats per minute. Moreover, Superpremium subscribers would enjoy 20-30 hours of audiobook listening—a notable increase from the 15 free hours available with the current Premium subscription.
Additionally, Hypixely found a feature called Soundcheck, designed to analyze your listening habits and reveal a mix of sounds that’s uniquely yours. However, Messina indicates that this feature is now referred to as “Your Sound Capsule,” possibly linked to Spotify’s earlier “playlist in a bottle” initiative—an experiential musical time capsule launched earlier this year. Messina also discovered references to a feature labeled Highlights, which seems to offer Last.fm-style listening statistics.
When asked for comments on these findings, Spotify declined to provide further information. “At Spotify, we continually innovate and brainstorm to enhance our offerings and deliver value to users. We don’t engage in speculation regarding potential features and have nothing new to share at this time,” a spokesperson stated.
