Stability AI Launches Enhanced Stable Diffusion Models on Amazon Bedrock

Stability AI is currently navigating challenges in establishing its business within a fiercely competitive market for text-to-image generative AI tools.

Today, the company announced an enhanced partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS), which will introduce three advanced text-to-image AI models on the Amazon Bedrock platform. Previously, only the older yet capable SDXL model was available.

Stability AI now offers a suite of three sophisticated models: Stable Image Ultra, Stable Diffusion 3 Large, and Stable Image Core. Each model excels in different areas, from ultra-realistic imagery to efficient high-volume asset generation, providing enterprise users with tailored options for diverse tasks.

These new models will join AWS's existing offerings on Amazon Bedrock, which already includes various image generation capabilities, such as the Titan model.

Evolution of Stable Diffusion Models

Stability AI began with its flagship model, Stable Diffusion, but has significantly expanded its lineup in recent years. The evolution of these generative AI models mirrors advancements across the sector, where larger models generally deliver greater power at the cost of increased resource requirements.

Stable Diffusion 3.0 debuted as a preview in February 2023 and became widely available via API in April. In June, Stability AI launched the Stable Diffusion Medium model, rebranding the original model as Stable Diffusion Large. Notably, the Stable Diffusion Ultra was also released quietly via API.

“Stable Image Ultra is our flagship model, incorporating the capabilities of the SD3 Large and advanced workflows for the highest quality images,” said Scott Trowbridge, VP of Business Development at Stability AI. “It’s designed for industries demanding exceptional visual fidelity, such as marketing, advertising, and architecture.”

In contrast, Stable Image Core, based on SDXL, aims to deliver a faster and more cost-effective option. Currently, Stable Diffusion 3 Medium is not available on Amazon Bedrock for initial release.

“SD3 Medium is a two billion parameter model ideal for consumer PCs, laptops, and enterprise-tier GPUs,” Trowbridge added. “It is available for self-hosting and via API.”

Expanding Go-To-Market Strategies

Over the past year, Stability AI has explored various go-to-market strategies to enhance its commercial presence.

In December 2023, the company launched a membership model to generate revenue, accompanied by the introduction of the Stable Assistant chatbot that provides model access. Users are charged based on their usage through the API or Stable Assistant.

However, Stability AI has also faced operational challenges, including the resignation of founder and CEO Emad Mostaque in March, followed by the appointment of new CEO Prem Akkaraju in June, which was accompanied by fresh capital investment.

As for pricing, it remains unclear how the costs of running models on Amazon Bedrock stack up against other options. Stability AI did not disclose specific comparisons when queried.

Overall, multiple access points for their models signal potential revenue growth for Stability AI. This partnership with Amazon Bedrock likely represents just one of several future agreements with cloud service providers.

“Stability AI is continually exploring ways to broaden access to our models through cloud providers, system integrators, and other service platforms,” Trowbridge mentioned.
