Storyblok Secures $80M to Enhance AI Features in Its User-Friendly 'Headless' CMS for Non-Technical Users

If content is indeed king, today's focus is on the expansion of that kingdom. Initially, print and traditional media were enhanced by websites, and now those websites are evolving with a rapidly growing array of apps, social media platforms, and content powered by artificial intelligence (AI). In this dynamic landscape, Storyblok—a startup from Linz, Austria—is poised to make significant strides after successfully securing $80 million in Series C funding to advance its business.

Storyblok offers a cutting-edge content management system (CMS) rooted in a "headless" architecture. This approach strikes a balance between rigid template-based platforms and customized solutions that require extensive development and ongoing maintenance of various components within content and front-end technology stacks.

The additional funding will support Storyblok's expansion efforts across Europe and the U.S., as well as the integration of new automation and AI tools into its offerings.

Alongside this funding announcement, Storyblok unveiled the beta version of Ideation Room—a collaborative space designed for users to brainstorm and develop new ideas at the early stages of their creative process, supported by AI to enhance content quality and execution.

Dominik Angerer, CEO and founder of Storyblok, noted the company’s collaboration with OpenAI in developing AI tools, enhancing platform usability while potentially assisting in content generation.

As of now, Storyblok employs 240 individuals and plans to significantly boost its hiring efforts. Leading the Series C investment is Brighton Park Capital, marking a substantial leap for Storyblok, which previously raised $47 million in a Series B round in 2022. While the startup has not disclosed its current valuation, it reported that its user base has grown impressively—more than doubling from 74,000 in 2022 to 200,000, indicating a successful “up round.”

In total, Storyblok has raised $138 million to date. Angerer anticipates profitability by the end of 2025, emphasizing the tremendous market potential for CMS providers, which could reach an annual value of $20 billion to $25 billion. He remarked, “Content has transitioned from being valuable exclusively for B2C brands to an essential component of strategy for virtually any company across all industries.” Although legacy companies still dominate the mass market, modern headless CMS players like Storyblok are steadily capturing a growing share.

Storyblok's unique selling proposition lies in its ability to cater not only to developers—typically the primary users of CMS platforms—but also to non-technical personnel. Well-known clients such as Adidas, T-Mobile, Renault, and the alt-milk brand Oatly utilize Storyblok’s platform, which currently manages approximately 250,000 active projects.

Creatives have long faced the challenge of building an audience and a sustainable business around their content. In recent times, this challenge has intensified, particularly with the rise of AI. The traditional value that human creativity brings to content creation is now in question as generative AI evolves.

While Storyblok has kept the human creator in focus, the integration of AI raises important questions about the future role of these creators. For now, the opportunity to back companies leveraging AI for immediate benefits is substantial. Kevin Magan from Brighton Park commented, “Almost all of our companies today integrate AI into their products or roadmap. We recognize that AI will play a crucial role in most application-level software moving forward.”

In addition to Brighton Park, previous investors HV Capital, Mubadala Capital, 3VC, and Firstminute Capital also participated in this Series C funding round.
