Sutro Launches No-Code AI-Powered App Creation Tool for Effortless Development

AI is revolutionizing the way we search for information, create content, code, analyze data, and more—and it's now making app development more accessible than ever. Meet Sutro, an innovative AI-driven startup that claims to empower users to build fully production-ready applications for web, iOS, and Android in mere minutes, all without any prior coding experience.

Sutro aims to free founders from the technical burdens of app development by automating complex processes, including AI integration, product management, design, hosting, and the use of specialized programming languages.

Founded in late 2021 by Tomas Halgas, a machine learning and compiler expert, and Owen Campbell-Moore, a former Product Manager at Google and Facebook, Sutro is now equipped with leadership that combines deep technical knowledge and industry experience. While Halgas was previously at Twitter during its transitional period leading up to Elon Musk's acquisition, he has now taken on the role of CEO, allowing Campbell-Moore to transition to a position at OpenAI.

Halgas envisions Sutro as a comprehensive product team designed to simplify the app development process, akin to creating a website. “Since my university days, I've observed how outdated software engineering practices can be,” Halgas shared. “We often focus excessively on technical details instead of nurturing the uniqueness of our products.”

Traditionally, developers spend days wrestling with foundational aspects like infrastructure, authentication, and security before they can begin working on their innovative ideas. “This is simply inefficient—there must be a way to automate common tasks,” Halgas pondered.

The founders were captivated by advancements in GPT technology, seeing it as part of a transformative future. They envisioned a platform that acts as product managers, marketers, engineers, and data scientists at once—where users can present their ideas and target audiences, and Sutro would handle everything from mockups and design tweaks to deploying servers and scaling the product as it grows.

However, building sophisticated applications, which may involve thousands of lines of code, still presents challenges that current AI cannot fully address. Sutro combines the strengths of AI technologies like GPT-4 and other large language models with rule-based compilers. While much of the heavy lifting relies on GPT, the team utilizes open-source models in certain areas.

Using its proprietary compiler technology, Sutro allows users to kickstart app development with a prompt that details their desired product. After inputting their specifications, Sutro's LLM-powered AI generates the iOS, Android, and web components while establishing the backend infrastructure. Users can customize visual styles and app functionalities through a studio toolkit. They can choose to either use Sutro in a self-serve mode or collaborate closely with its team. Once the project is complete, users have the flexibility to publish their app and make ongoing edits and upgrades as needed.

“What sets us apart is that we’re not just another no-code platform,” Halgas emphasizes. “Traditional no-code solutions often involve dragging and dropping, which still requires considerable effort to achieve results. We function more like a fully integrated development team than just a no-code tool.”

This means users can implement high-level features with ease. For instance, if they want to add a ratings system to app posts, Sutro can identify where to integrate this feature, introduce a ranking algorithm, and aggregate ratings seamlessly. Moreover, users can incorporate their own custom code and components.

The company features a demo that showcases its ability to create a basic version of Pinterest in under a minute.

Sutro manages hosting and all backend-related work, operating on a subscription model based on the size and complexity of the projects. Although the startup has not publicly disclosed its pricing, it asserts that costs will be significantly lower than hiring a development team.

Currently, 715 creators have utilized Sutro's platform to develop 934 applications. With a small team based in London and San Francisco, including members with experience from major tech companies like Uber, Twitter, Meta, and Google, Sutro is now inviting access requests through its new landing page.

Previously, Sutro successfully raised $2.2 million in funding from Eniac Ventures and other notable angel investors, including Peter Welinder, VP of Product and Partnerships at OpenAI.
