OpenAI continues to enhance the functionality of ChatGPT Plus, while the free version of ChatGPT has also received noteworthy updates. One standout feature that was previously exclusive to ChatGPT Plus—custom GPTs—is now accessible for free. This innovative feature empowers users to create tailored versions of ChatGPT designed for specific tasks, enabling personalized interactions using custom prompts, all without requiring any coding skills.
Since last year, users have been developing a wide array of GPTs, resulting in custom models for virtually every purpose imaginable: from travel guides and music creators to presentation generators and logo makers. If you can envision it, there’s likely a GPT for it.
The GPT store simplifies the search for the most popular and effective models by showcasing the best custom GPTs. With sections dedicated to featured content and “By ChatGPT,” you’ll discover a variety of GPTs developed by the OpenAI team. All of this is now accessible to free users; however, there are certain limitations, such as the inability to create your own GPTs and a lack of access to image generation capabilities, meaning tools like DALL·E won't be available.
Moreover, OpenAI unveiled GPT-4o on May 13, and several of its advanced features are now available to free users. For instance, this new model demonstrates exceptional image comprehension, allowing it to translate menus just by analyzing a photo. A demonstration video on the OpenAI website showcases this capability, as a user sends a picture of a croissant and requests its nutritional information.
In addition to features of GPT-4o, free users now have access to web browsing capabilities that were previously limited to paid subscribers. You'll also be able to upload documents for ChatGPT to summarize, translate, or analyze. For example, when sending a spreadsheet, you can request analysis on a specific element and have a chart generated based on the results. Furthermore, ChatGPT will utilize its memory feature to remember specific information about you, enhancing future interactions.
It's essential to note that many of these features are categorized as “limited” for free users, meaning you may encounter usage caps at some point. When this occurs, you will automatically revert to GPT-3.5.
While certain features, such as video calling with ChatGPT and near-seamless voice chatting, will initially be exclusive to paid users, they are expected to be included in future updates—though you might need to endure its programmed laugh.
