Uber Introduces OpenAI-Powered AI Assistant for Driver EV Inquiries

Uber is intensifying its efforts to integrate more electric vehicles (EVs) into its ride-hailing and delivery services. As part of this initiative, the company is introducing an AI-powered chatbot to assist drivers with all their EV-related inquiries. Slated for launch in early 2025, this AI assistant will utilize OpenAI’s GPT-4o technology.

Initially, the assistant will focus solely on electric vehicle questions, such as charging locations and purchasing advice. However, an Uber spokesperson hinted that its capabilities may expand to cover additional topics in the future.

This collaboration was announced during Uber's Go-Get event in London, where the company highlighted the potential of OpenAI's advanced model, known for its ability to engage in human-like conversations and adept reasoning across text, audio, and visual formats.

Drivers will easily access the AI assistant from the Uber driver app's home screen, with the chatbot being regularly updated with new information. Uber plans for the assistant to provide tailored responses based on each driver’s unique circumstances, including their location and any relevant government incentives.

According to an Uber spokesperson, future developments will allow drivers to communicate with the chatbot verbally, enabling it to respond audibly to inquiries. The specific languages supported by the AI assistant have yet to be disclosed, but Uber plans to reveal more information as the launch date approaches. OpenAI’s GPT-4o reportedly supports over 50 languages.

Accompanying the AI rollout, Uber will initiate an “EV mentorship program.” In this program, highly-rated drivers with EV experience can earn cash rewards and other incentives for mentoring those interested in transitioning to electric vehicles.

At the Go-Get event, Uber presented its AI plans alongside a series of other EV and climate-conscious initiatives. This year’s focus was clearly on sustainability, with the company unveiling several new features to facilitate EV choices for both riders and drivers.

For instance, Uber’s Uber Green service now allows riders to opt for either hybrid or electric vehicles in over 180 markets. Additionally, a new EV-only option is available in 40 cities, including New York City, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Paris, Auckland, and more. Riders can also configure their preferences in the app to ensure they are matched with nearby electric vehicles.
