Unlock AI Tutoring with Duolingo's Max Plan for Just $30 a Month

Duolingo has joined the wave of companies embracing generative AI with the launch of Duolingo Max, a new premium subscription tier. This offering includes two innovative GPT-4 features designed to enhance the language learning experience.

The first feature, “Explain My Answer,” allows users to engage with Duo, the chatbot named after the company's owl mascot. This interactive tool provides detailed explanations of why an answer is correct or incorrect and offers additional clarification as needed.

The second feature, Roleplay, enables users to practice their language skills in various real-life scenarios. For instance, learners can simulate ordering food and drinks at a Parisian café. Duolingo emphasizes that each conversation will be unique, even with repeated practice, while users earn experience points as they complete these sessions.

Duolingo CEO Luis von Ahn expressed his vision for AI in education, stating, “Most people don’t have access to a one-on-one human tutor. I believe AI can recreate that experience at scale for learners everywhere.” He voiced excitement about sharing these powerful new tools with Duolingo’s global audience.

Developed since 2022 in partnership with OpenAI, Duolingo Max leverages the latest advancements in GPT-4. However, Duolingo acknowledges that AI isn’t flawless. The company has worked closely with OpenAI to refine this technology and continues to improve it based on user feedback. Users can report inaccuracies in AI responses with a long press on a message and can rate their experience with the Explain My Answer feature using emojis.

Starting today, Duolingo Max is available to English-speaking iOS users learning Spanish and French.
