Last November, Notion, the popular note-taking app renowned for enhancing productivity, began testing a generative machine learning feature known as Notion AI. Recently, the company announced that this feature is now available to all users, including those on the free plan.
During the alpha testing phase, over 2 million people signed up for the waitlist. Insights from this testing revealed that most users preferred leveraging Notion AI to refine their writing rather than generating blog posts or marketing emails from scratch. The tool provides a comprehensive formatting menu that allows users to shorten or expand text, adjust tone, and correct spelling and grammatical errors. According to Notion, "This suggests that most people start by writing their own content and treat AI as a thought partner and editor.” Many testers frequently utilized the "improve writing" option, which serves as a one-click enhancement for their content.
In response to user feedback, Notion has completely redesigned Notion AI to be more iterative and conversational. The new version generates follow-up prompts until users are satisfied with the results. Notion AI can assist in not only creating new content but also summarizing long documents, extracting key insights from disorganized notes, and improving writing style.
Currently, No waitlist is required, though there is a usage limit for Notion AI. Users can access 20 free AI responses until April 5. After that, a subscription will cost $10 per month, with Plus, Business, and Enterprise customers also paying $10 per member per month. Annual plan subscribers will benefit from a 20% discount.
The swift development of Notion AI comes amidst a time of scrutiny for generative AI technology. Previous incidents, such as CNET's need to correct numerous AI-generated articles and Microsoft limiting its Bing AI chatbot to avoid inappropriate responses, have raised questions about reliability in this evolving field.
