Vimeo is making significant advancements in integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its video hosting and sharing services. This week, the platform introduced a range of AI-driven tools to help users create scripts, record clips with a built-in teleprompter, and eliminate long pauses and filler words such as “uh” and “um” from recordings. These innovative features will be part of Vimeo's standard plan, set to launch in July for $20 per month.
According to Chief Product Officer Ashraf Alkarmi, these new tools are aimed at entry-level video creators—including CEOs, employees, and social media managers—who often lack the time and resources needed to produce high-quality videos. Vimeo's internal research indicates that 50% of clients typically require multiple takes to create videos, with 25% needing five or more attempts. Alkarmi notes, “While video production effectively conveys powerful messages, it can also present challenges. With AI, we enable anyone to create videos quickly, often in just a single take.”
Vimeo's script generator leverages generative AI technology, specifically the OpenAI API, allowing users to create video scripts based on simple descriptions and key parameters like tone (e.g., "confident," "inspirational," or "casual") and length. The teleprompter tool lets users customize the script display with adjustable font sizes and speeds, while the text-based video editor automatically removes filler words and awkward pauses.
Alkarmi envisions these tools being utilized for quick and engaging clip creation, virtual events, and short marketing videos. “One of the biggest misconceptions about Vimeo is that we're just an entertainment platform; we've evolved significantly,” he explained. “We aim to empower businesses to harness video as effectively as they do text or images, enhancing communication with both internal and external audiences.”
The shift towards AI adoption is accelerating, and Alkarmi emphasizes that Vimeo has been investing in AI for years. The 2019 acquisition of Magisto, a company developing AI video-editing technology, has been foundational in developing Vimeo's creation tools, enabling seamless integration of stock photos, videos, and personal footage. Alkarmi sees AI as a central focus for Vimeo's future strategy, especially in light of rising competition.
Numerous startups, including Capsule, Descript, and Dumme, are now offering AI-powered video editing tools, while established companies like Adobe recognize AI as essential for future workflows. Alkarmi stated, “We're just beginning to explore what AI can offer organizations. I foresee a future where familiarity with AI is essential for video production. AI is a priority for my product team because it addresses our customers' needs rather than merely following a trend. Expect more innovative products from us as we work to seamlessly integrate AI into our offerings, simplifying video creation and enhancing the overall user experience.”
