YouTube has implemented a new policy requiring creators to disclose the use of AI-generated content in their videos, particularly when such content could be mistaken for real people or events. This announcement, made via a blog post, emphasizes the platform's commitment to transparency and the responsibility of creators in the digital landscape.
When uploading videos, creators must check a box in Creator Studio indicating whether their content includes “synthetic media.” This could encompass a variety of materials, such as deepfake videos that present politicians making statements they never actually said. YouTube noted that it reserves the right to label content even if the creator has not disclosed its AI origins, especially if there’s a risk of confusion or misinformation for viewers.
For videos flagged as containing synthetic content, YouTube will apply a specific label, informing audiences that the content was generated by AI. Importantly, videos addressing sensitive topics—including elections, health, news, and finance—will feature a more prominent warning label to alert viewers to the presence of AI-generated material.
However, the rules are designed to exclude content deemed “clearly unrealistic,” which includes animations or fantastical scenes, such as someone riding a unicorn. Additionally, creators are not required to mention generative AI if it was used solely for production enhancements, such as background blurring or lighting adjustments. The use of beauty filters is also exempt from these guidelines.
YouTube is concurrently developing a streamlined process for users to request the removal of deepfake content, with further details to be announced soon. The introduction of these rules aligns with YouTube’s previous guidelines released in August regarding AI-generated music content, which aimed to address the rising trend of deepfake music, also referred to as “AI covers.” With these initiatives, YouTube seeks to foster a safer and more informed viewer experience as AI technology continues to evolve and integrate into creative platforms.
