AI-Powered Camera Module Developed by Raspberry Pi and Sony

Raspberry Pi and Sony have partnered to launch the Raspberry Pi AI Camera module for $70. This innovative camera features onboard AI processing, enabling users to develop edge AI solutions for visual data with ease. This release builds on Raspberry Pi’s commitment to enhance AI capabilities, following several non-AI camera modules since its first 5-megapixel camera in 2013.

“AI-based image processing is becoming an attractive tool for developers globally,” said Raspberry Pi CEO Eben Upton. “We look forward to seeing the achievements of our community using the Raspberry Pi AI Camera’s capabilities.”

The AI camera is compatible with all Raspberry Pi single-board computers, integrating the RP2040 microcontroller chip with Sony’s IMX500 image sensor, which manages AI processing. This integration eliminates the need for additional components, such as accelerators or GPUs, that are usually required for handling large-scale visual data.

With 12.3 megapixels, the Raspberry Pi AI Camera captures video at 10 frames per second in 4056 x 3040 resolution or 40 fps in 2028 x 1520. It features manually adjustable focus, a 76-degree field of view, and compact dimensions of 25 x 24 x 11.9mm, making it nearly identical in size to the Camera Module 3 released last year.
