Apple Explores Personal Robotics Technology: The Future of Smart Home Devices
According to renowned Apple analyst Mark Gurman, multiple teams within Apple are actively developing personal robotics technology, signaling a significant future direction for the company. Apple engineers are currently focused on creating a home robot that can follow users around their houses and are also designing an advanced desktop device that utilizes robotic technology for mobile displays.
This news has positively impacted the stock price of leading home robotics company iRobot, which saw an increase of over 15% during trading on that day. Gurman notes that Apple halted its electric vehicle project earlier this year, and its mixed reality headset is expected to take years to become profitable. By venturing into robotics, Apple aims to expand its market share in home devices while leveraging advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance product value.
Industry analysts highlight the growing interest in robotics amid the rapid development of AI. Humanoid robots are seen as a potential ultimate manifestation of AI, with many practical applications gaining validation. According to the "China Robotics Industry Development Report" released by the China Electronics Society, home service robots currently hold over 60% of the domestic market share, and the service robot market in China is projected to exceed $10 billion by 2024.
In 2022, domestic cleaning robot manufacturers Ecovacs and Roborock captured market shares of 60.5% and 50%, respectively. Ecovacs has partnered with iRobot to potentially expand market reach. At CES 2024, companies like Ecovacs and Roborock introduced new high-end products priced over $1,000, which are compatible with Apple's smart home ecosystem through the Matter smart home protocol.
Additionally, several companies in the A-share Apple ecosystem are also entering the robotics sector. For instance, Jiahe Intelligent's underwater cleaning robot has received certification as an approved supplier for Apple, while products from Bojie and Lingyi Zhizao service the smart robotics market.
As Apple increases its investments in home robotics and smart products, the attractiveness of this sector is drawing in more competitors, intensifying market competition. Apple's innovations could lead to transformative changes in home smart devices and drive industry advancements forward.
