Apple Partners with OpenAI: The Future of AI Technology on iPhone
Recent reports indicate that Apple is set to introduce exciting new AI features for iPhone users at the 2024 WWDC. This innovative AI initiative will integrate cloud and on-device models, made possible through Apple’s collaboration with renowned AI developer OpenAI.
With just three weeks to go before the conference, the partnership between Apple and OpenAI appears to be finalized. According to Bloomberg's Apple expert, Mark Gurman, this collaboration follows Apple’s earlier attempts to achieve similar goals with Google. The main focus of the partnership is to incorporate OpenAI's technology directly into the upcoming iOS 18, which will enable deep integration of ChatGPT with Apple’s popular products, including the new iPhone 16.
Anticipated AI enhancements may include features such as AI-powered article transcription, voice memo summaries, and AI-assisted photo editing—functions already seen in products from companies like Adobe and Google. However, details on additional “multimodal” AI capabilities have yet to be revealed. To support cloud-based AI processing, Apple plans to deploy high-performance M-series chips in its data centers.
While Apple has consistently maintained a distinct level of innovation in both software and hardware, some executives have expressed concerns about introducing chatbots on iPhone, citing the potential for AI to generate misleading information that could detract from user experience. Currently, Apple aims to develop its own chatbot technology, but until then, it will rely on OpenAI’s capabilities to bridge this gap.
Although OpenAI's ChatGPT app was launched on iPhone over a year ago, advancements in AI technology are accelerating the transition to more sophisticated "digital assistants," challenging the traditional role of Siri. Google’s Gemini model has made similar strides on Android, but user acceptance of these new technologies varies.
As it stands, users can set ChatGPT as their assistant through shortcuts on iOS. However, it is evident that Apple needs to compete with Google’s Gemini. At Google’s I/O developer conference, the company demonstrated how AI is integrating across Android and other products.
Apple is also showcasing its AI capabilities, particularly with the latest M4 chip in the iPad Pro, which claims to perform 38 trillion operations per second, making on-device AI applications more feasible. However, few applications have fully leveraged this processing power to date. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s developer conference is expected to highlight the growing importance of AI, while Qualcomm’s new chip claims to reach 45 trillion operations per second.
As AI technology continues to evolve, the partnership between Apple and OpenAI presents exciting possibilities for iPhone users. The future developments of this collaboration are highly anticipated.
