Qualcomm has consistently set new standards for download speeds with its 5G modems, culminating in the launch of the X65 in 2021, the company's first 10-gigabit 5G modem. In 2022, Qualcomm introduces a new direction with the X70 modem, designed for heightened consistency and power efficiency, thanks to its innovative AI features.
The X70 isn’t Qualcomm's first modem to utilize machine learning; the X65 benefited from this technology for enhanced antenna tuning based on hand grip adjustments. However, the X70 stands out with a dedicated 5G AI processor, a pioneering feature in cellular modems.
This specialized processor not only boosts average speeds but also enhances mmWave beam management, enabling a stronger connection in challenging spectrum conditions. It further optimizes network selection and antenna tuning, resulting in improved coverage and link strength. Qualcomm asserts that the X70 maximizes a device’s available spectrum resources at any given moment.
In terms of speed, the X70 is impressive, boasting theoretical download speeds of up to 10 Gbps. However, real-world performance will largely depend on factors like carrier infrastructure and the condition of their 5G network.
Qualcomm plans to begin shipping Snapdragon X70 samples to commercial clients in the latter half of 2022. While specific customers remain unnamed, devices featuring the X70 are expected to launch by late 2022, potentially integrating with the next iteration of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 series. Devices equipped with the X70 will proudly display the Snapdragon Connect branding, symbolizing the latest advancements in connectivity technology.
