Google CEO Warns OpenAI: Legal Consequences Await for Training AI Video Models with YouTube Data

In a recent public event, Google CEO Sundar Pichai shared crucial insights regarding the competitive landscape of artificial intelligence (AI). He issued a warning that if it is confirmed that Microsoft-backed OpenAI used YouTube content to train its video generation model, Google will take legal action to address this issue.

This caution arises from the controversy surrounding OpenAI's potential use of YouTube material in training its video generation model. OpenAI's Chief Technology Officer was unable to clarify whether the training data for their model, Sora, included YouTube videos and expressed uncertainty about the specific sources.

Regarding the potential violation of Google's terms of service by OpenAI, Pichai remarked, "That's a question for them (OpenAI) to address. We have clear terms of service and usually communicate with other companies to ensure they understand these conditions. We will resolve this matter."

Notably, to compete with OpenAI's Sora, Google unveiled its own video generation model, Veo, at the 2024 I/O Developer Conference. Veo is designed to create high-quality videos exceeding one minute in length, with a resolution of up to 1080P, and it supports various visual and cinematic styles, showcasing Google's capabilities and commitment in the AI video generation arena.

Pichai also discussed Google's collaboration with Apple, emphasizing the company's focus on delivering an exceptional experience within the Apple ecosystem. He expressed satisfaction with the popularity of AI features on iOS and assured that Google plans to introduce more functionalities, including Gemini, to strengthen its partnership with Apple.

As AI technology continues to evolve, video generation has emerged as a critical battleground for tech giants. The competition between Google’s Veo and OpenAI’s Sora has garnered significant attention. Pichai's warning not only underscores Google's determination to safeguard its content resources but also foreshadows an intensified rivalry in the future of AI video generation.
